2021 Municipal Election breakdown: Ward 11

With a great amount of investment happening in urban communities like Victoria Park, and a ring road further south, Tara Overholt takes a look at the issues facing Ward 11

CALGARY — Over two dozen communities make up ward 11 in the southwest part of Calgary. From older communities that run as far south as Anderson Road, to newer urban neighbourhoods like Victoria Park where hundreds of millions of dollars of investment is headed for the new Calgary event centre.

But urban planner Francisco Alaniz Uribe wonders if the area will take off quickly.

“Sometimes we think of these places on a grand scale, so a density of towers that are 30 stories high, but we don’t have that population growth to absorb and to populate those towers quickly.”

Residents of those urban areas have development and public transit concerns as the Green Line will go right through them, but a great issue for many in ward 11 has been traffic.

While the new southwest ring road has helped many get around the city, it has its own set of problems, most notably speed.
