Central Alberta police chase ends in fiery crash

RED DEER – A central Alberta police chase ended with a fiery crash Monday afternoon.

Red Deer RCMP says officers were called to an armed car-jacking near 50 Ave. around 5:30 p.m.

Police believe a man had jacked a car in Lacombe around 4:30 p.m., drove to Red Deer, and ditched the car he had stolen.

Mounties believe that once he had abandoned the car he stole in Lacombe, he stole another vehicle and took off in that one down Red Deer’s Gaetz Ave.

Officers tracked the driver down and tried to stop him, but the driver didn’t stop.

As the suspect was fleeing, he went through an intersection and crashed with a pickup truck. Both vehicles went up in flames as a result of the crash.

Both drivers were taken hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mounties say an investigation is ongoing and there’s no word on charges yet.
