Active cases, ICU admissions climb in weekend COVID-19 update

CALGARY — Alberta identified more than 5,000 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend.
The new infections come after nearly 46,000 tests were completed, for a positivity rate of around 11.3 per cent.
The weekend breakdown is as follows:
- 1,882 cases identified on Friday
- 1,541 cases identified on Saturday
- 1,758 cases identified on Sunday
As of Monday afternoon, there are now 21,307 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta. A jump of 1,267 from Friday’s update.

Of active cases in Alberta, Calgary continues to lead the way with 3,852 — while Edmonton now has 3,236.
Meanwhile, 70 per cent of cases identified over the last 24 hours were in unvaccinated people.

Twenty-three more people lost their lives from COVID-19 over the last three days.
There are now 1,063 people in hospital with the virus, 265 of which have been admitted to the ICU. Of those in the ICU with COVID-19, 233 are unvaccinated, or about 88 per cent.
In the last four months, there have been 153 people under the age of 40 who have been admitted to the ICU with COVID-19. Of those people, just one person was vaccinated.
Over the last three days, more than 45,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine were administered in Alberta.
Of those 12 and older, 83 per cent have now received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 73.8 per cent are now fully vaccinated.
