Farkas vs. Gondek: Poll shows councillors in tight race for mayor

CALGARY – A new poll shows Jeromy Farkas and Jyoti Gondek in a close race for Calgary’s mayoral seat.

The ThinkHQ Public Affairs survey shows Ward 11’s Farkas in the lead with 30 per cent of those polled saying they intend to cast a ballot in his favour.

Ward 3’s Gondek isn’t too far behind, capturing 25 per cent of the vote among those polled.

“Since the start of the campaign, Jeromy Farkas has been the front-runner; he still is but his margin is shrinking. Jyoti Gondek has made significant gains in the past few weeks and is closing in on Farkas, and with still 28 per cent of voters undecided, the current 5-point gap doesn’t mean much,” said ThinkHQ President Marc Henry.

Much farther behind is Ward 6’s Jeff Davison. Davison is only claiming six per cent of voters polled.

Former Liberal MLA and MP Kent Hehr, who recently announced he’d be withdrawing due to health concerns, captured three per cent of the vote among those polled, along with businessman Brad Field.

Several others of the 27 contenders had two per cent of the vote.

The poll also found Farkas’ fanbase tends to be men living outside the inner-city area and voting intentions for Farkas increase with age.

“Farkas has the benefit of time, i.e., there’s not much left; after all, the advance polls open on Oct. 4. He also has a committed voter base which typically is more dependable in terms of turning out,” added Henry.

Gondek is outperforming her competitors in the city’s northeast and in the inner city. She also does better with younger voters.

“Gondek has the benefit of momentum, more wind in her sails, and greater growth potential in her vote share. Kent Hehr’s decision to withdraw from the race likely most directly benefits Councillor Gondek’s prospects.”

Henry says what the candidates do on the campaign trail in the coming weeks will matter–both execution and how that plan to address the issues that matter most to voters will impact their prospects.
