Calgary Fire responds to multiple early morning incidents

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It was a busy morning for the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) as three separate fires burned across the city.

It all happened just after 3 a.m. when the fire department says it responded to a house fire in Rundle, an RV fire in the southeast, and an apartment fire in the northwest.

Crews were dispatched to a fourth fire later Saturday morning in Shawnee Common.

In a release, the CFD says crews tackled a fire coming out of a rear bedroom window in a single-storey detached home in Rundle. The only person inside at the time was able to escape on their own, and they were taken to hospital for minor smoke inhalation by EMS.

Around the same time in the southeast Valleyfield commercial area, crews were able to get one person out of a burning RV. That person was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and crews were able to knock down the fire.

Later, firefighters responded to calls for smoke in a three-storey building in the northwest. That building had to be evacuated, and the fire was put out.

Just after 8:30 a.m., occupants escaped a fire inside a two-storey apartment building in the southwest area of Shawnee Common.

CFD Battalion Chief Paul Frederick says crews attended and knocked down the blaze, and continued to monitor for hot spots.

Investigation into the cause of that fire continues. Frederick says the fire originated on the exterior of the building.

In light of these incidents, the CFD is reminding Calgarians to check and maintain their smoke alarms to make sure they are working properly.
