What’s open and closed in Calgary this Labour Day?

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Since 1894 Labour Day has been marked as a statutory public holiday in Canada, on the first Monday in September.

Calgarians wanting to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather can go golfing at a city course, or rent sailboats, canoes, and kayaks through the Glenmore Sailing Club.

However, city-owned recreation and fitness centres are closed, as well as administrative buildings like city hall.

Anybody planning to travel across the city is reminded that on-street parking is free today, and Calgary Parking Authority parkades, and select surface lots are charging holiday rates.

Calgary Transit is providing a Sunday level of service.

Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement, which advocated for the eight hour work day, further allowing eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.
