Charges laid in infant death on Stoney Nakoda First Nation

CALGARY — A 21-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in relation to the homicide of a six-month-old infant late last month.

On August 26 around 6:30 p.m., RCMP were called to a home on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation to do a welfare check on a child. Once inside the home, police found the infant dead.

Following an autopsy, the manner of death was deemed a homicide.

On Friday, police charged Tyriq Lyman Kootenay, 21, with second-degree murder, assault causing bodily harm and choking with intent involving a 24-year-old woman from a prior incident.

Following a Judicial hearing, Kootenay was remanded to custody and will next appear in court on Oct. 5.
