Two more Paralympics medals for Canada on Day 3 in Tokyo

TOKYO (NEWS 1130) – Canada’s Paralympic athletes have added to the country’s medal count, with two silvers won on Day 3 of the Games in Tokyo.

Track cyclist Kate O’Brien finished second in the women’s C4 500-metre time trial with a time of 35.439 seconds Friday. Kadeena Cox of Great Britain took gold with a time of 34.812 seconds.

O’Brien, who is from Calgary, has been an experienced athlete for years. Tokyo 2020 marks her Paralympic debut.

She joined the Para sport world after her life was changed by a catastrophic bike crash in 2017, according to her Team Canada profile. That came just a year after she competed in the Rio Olympics.

O’Brien was told after the crash that nearly took her life that she would never bike or walk again.

Meanwhile, Canada’s other silver medal on Day 3 of the Paralympics was won by Priscilla Gagné in the judo women’s 52-kilogram category. Algeria’s Cherine Abdellaoui took gold.

Gagné, who has a visual impairment called retinitis pigmentosa, carried the Canadian flag at the opening ceremonies on Tuesday.

Canada now has six medals at the Paralympics in Tokyo, with four total silvers, and two bronze.
