COVID-19 cases jump for second straight day in Alberta as hospitalizations surpass 300

Thursday’s COVID-19 update reports even higher cases than what we saw on Wednesday. Hospitalizations and ICU numbers continue to climb in the province as well.

CALGARY — Alberta saw another day of rising COVID-19 cases on Thursday, with the province reporting 1,112 new infections.

The new cases come after more than 10,500 tests were completed, for a positivity rate of around 10.5 per cent.

Active infections in Alberta also saw another day of surging numbers, with 9,066 active cases, a 570 case rise from Wednesday.

There are now 308 people in hospital with COVID-19, a 24 person increase from the day prior, and 64 people in the ICU.

Four additional deaths were reported on Thursday.

When it comes to active cases in the province, Edmonton has now surpassed Calgary for most active infections with 2,040.

Calgary currently has 1,981 active cases of COVID-19.

On the vaccination front, more than 5.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to date in Alberta.

Of the eligible population in the province, 77.6 per cent have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 69.2 per cent are fully vaccinated.
