Wildfire west of Calgary brings traffic to a halt

CANMORE — A forest fire west of Calgary has brought traffic to a halt.

The fire sparked up near Dead Man’s Flats, east of Canmore, around 4:30 p.m. and fire crews have been fighting it since.

WATCH: Gemma Chiarastella captures the large fire while heading eastbound on Highway 1.

Traffic on Highway 1 heading eastbound has been stopped from Bow Valley Trail to Highway 1x.

Gemma Chiarastella, who was passing through the area as the fire was forming described the scene.

“We had just left Canmore and we could see a huge plume of smoke and didn’t know if it was coming from the plant or not, and then all of a sudden, it was like something blew up and then another huge pile of smoke came up so we started videotaping and we drove right past the fire,” she said.

Canmore RCMP is currently investigating the cause of the fire while crews work to extinguish it.
