CALGARY — How much will reopening the border to Americans impact tourism in Calgary?
According to one expert, we aren’t expecting to see an immediate surge in the city.
“Obviously we’ll get some guests that will come up because they’ve been restricted for the last 16 months, but because we’re not a ‘rubber tire market,’ we’re a ‘flight in’ type of market for international guests, that will come back, but it won’t be a rush to the border immediately,” said Cindy Ady with Tourism Calgary.

She says her reasoning behind that is based on the time of year.
“People that are planning a bit more long term, maybe even this winter for the ski season, but summer for all intents and purposes, from an international standpoint, particularly the U.S., they’re heading back to school right? So, we probably won’t see a rush of that type of traffic.”
Ady says eventually the goal is to return to 2019 levels when tourism in Calgary generated $2.5 billion.
