Calgary police lay charges in 30-year-old sexual assault case

CALGARY — It’s been more than 30 years, but Calgary police have finally closed a sexual assault case that went cold for the last three decades.

On May 4, 1991, a masked man broke into a home in the community of Southview where a young mother was home alone with her toddler.

Once inside, the man attacked and sexually assaulted the woman before fleeing.

Investigators extensively looked into the case, but no suspect was identified.

Through the years, the case was reviewed, and up until recently, no momentum was gained in solving it.

With advances in DNA science, police were able to identify a suspect and place them under arrest.

On July 7, the Sexual Assault Investigative Unit Cold Case Team charged Thomas Craig Brodie, 48, with break and enter, sexual assault, disguise with intent, and forcible confinement in relation to the 30-year-old offence.

Brodie is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 6.
