One dead, one injured in northwest Calgary crash

CALGARY — One person died and another was taken to hospital following a serious collision in the northwest on Friday morning.

Around 6:15 a.m., a Ford Taurus was driving northbound on 14 Street NW near 24 Avenue when it crossed over to the southbound lanes and hit a BMW X1 head-on.

The front of the Ford caught on fire, while the BMW was propelled backwards.

Police say the driver of the Ford was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and suffered fatal injuries from the crash.

The driver of the BMW suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

Police blocked off 14 Street in both directions at 24 Ave. for the investigation — the road has since reopened.

Now, police say speed and drug impairment are being investigated as a cause.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or the events that led up to it, are being asked to contact police.
