Suspect sought after fatal downtown stabbing

CALGARY — Calgary police have released photos of a man they believe was involved in a stabbing that left one man dead last week.

On June 30 around 7 p.m., police say the victim tried to intervene in an altercation between a woman and a man at James Short Park. The woman allegedly told the suspect to stop hitting her, at which point the victim got involved.

Police say they think the suspect pulled out a knife, at which point the victim ran into a car that was stopped on Fifth Avenue, near the Centre Street S.W. intersection. After the vehicle drove away, the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim.

He was transported to hospital, where he later died.

Following an autopsy, the victim has been identified as 62-year-old Paul March.

He was also wearing a grey, shirt, red shorts, a baseball hat and wearing black and white Nike shoes.

Police also have released a photo of a vehicle they believe contained someone who witnessed the altercation.

The vehicle is described as a red or burgundy SUV that was stopped in the eastbound curb lane of Fifth Avenue by Centre Street S.W. at 7:14 p.m.

Police are asking anyone who may have information to contact them immediately.
