Police, family confirm 11-year-old girl drowned in Calgary lake

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Calgary police confirm the 11-year-old girl who was pulled from Mahogany Lake on June 28 has died.

Investigators say Oghenefega Mine JohnGold, drowned after jumping off a dock and did not resurface.

In a statement via police, her parents, Efe and Oghenetega JohnGold describe her as a “very active, playful and friendly child, known for her smile and giving great hugs.”

“Fega proudly stated that she wanted to be a medical doctor when she grew up,” stated her family.

“She was also a passionate singer who spent a lot of time singing with her family and her church’s children choir.”

The family adds although her life on earth was short “she touched lots of lives and her memory will forever be cherished by her family and friends.”

Calgary police say she was rescued from Mahogany Lake on Monday but died later that day at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Police say the death was determined to be non-criminal.

An online fundraiser has been set up for the family.
