Jasper warns of wildfire risk and flooding

JASPER, Alta. (CityNews) – Jasper National Park is warning visitors of high water levels and increased fire risk because of the extreme heat.

Due to the heatwave hitting Western Canada, Parks Canada’s fire management team is closely monitoring the risk of a wildfire.

As of right now, there are no active wildfires within the park, however, the high temperatures means a fire can start easily and can spread quickly.

A fire ban will be put in place as of July 2 in day-use areas, picnic sites, and the backcountry.

Campfires will still be permitted in the front country campgrounds if they are in designated fire pits. As well as portable propane fire pits, gas or propane stoves and barbeques designed for cooking or heating, propane or gas-fuelled lanterns (enclosed flame), patio heaters (propane, catalytic or infrared/radiant) will all be permitted.

The park is also advising visitors and residents looking at using a beach, to go either early in the morning or in the evening to avoid traffic congestion, as day-use areas are seeing an increased number of visitors, and parking on the grass and brush could cause a wildfire.

In addition, some areas might be closed due to flooding.

If you plan on going to a lake or a river, wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), and keep an eye on children as rivers can sweep anyone away in an instant.
