Youth singers of Calgary summer camps open July 5

CALGARY – Children in kindergarten to grade 6 will be able to participate in the Youth Singers of Calgary’s in-person summer camps starting July 5.

SHOWBIZ KIDS camp coordinator Alicia Ward says the best thing about their week-long camps is the chance for kids to create original theatrical musicals.

“The students all decide what it’s going to be about—they create their own characters, write the scripts and do all the singing and dancing,” Ward said.

“So not only are they learning choral skills and choreography skills, but they are learning three songs, the choreography to those three songs, and then writing a brand new original play to tie all those songs together.”

At the end of each week-long camp, the play is shown off to parents and guardians and they leave with a recording of themselves singing their songs as a choir.

“You get to learn emapthy, you get to connect with other students your age—learn from them,” Ward said.

“You become a leader when you need to be, but you also learn how to collaborate.”

Ward adds that despite full COVID-19 restrictions being lifted on Canada Day, they plan to keep physical distancing and masking protocols in place.
