Driver impairment a possible factor in crash that injured tow truck driver

CALGARY – Calgary police are investigating whether driver impairment was behind a crash that seriously injured a tow truck driver Wednesday morning.

Paramedics said they were called to the scene in the area of 11 Street and 57 Avenue NE around 5:45 a.m.

The 45-year-old man was there attending to a broken down car when police say a black 2017 Subaru hit the operator and pinned him between the Subaru and his own tow truck.

EMS rushed the man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

As of Thursday afternoon, Calgary Police Sgt. Colin Foster tells 660 NEWS the tow truck driver remains in serious condition at the hospital.

“He sustained quite serious lower leg and pelvic injuries and also quite a severe head injury. So he’s still in critical condition but he is stable,” Sgt. Foster explained, adding the 28-year-old driver of the vehicle that struck the tow truck operator was released from the hospital on Wednesday and is still cooperating with police as to what happened.

Investigators are currently looking at whether driver impairment was a factor in the crash.

“In (every) critical incident collision, we always look at whether or not the drivers were intoxicated through drugs or alcohol. I can say at the moment that part of the investigation is still ongoing — and that it can take some time.”

Foster went on to say early findings indicate the Subaru driver had travelled eastbound on 64 Avenue, before turning south onto 11 Street NE. Anyone with more information about the crash or who may have dashcam footage is asked to call police or submit an anonymous tip via Crime Stoppers.
