Police arrest two suspects in carjackings that locked down schools, daycares in St. Albert

ST. ALBERT, Alta. (CityNews) – RCMP say they have arrested two men believed to be involved in a series of carjackings and attempted carjackings in a community northwest of Edmonton that forced schools and daycares into a “hold and secure.”

St. Albert RCMP placed the schools in a “hold and secure” Wednesday morning as a precautionary measure as the situation unfolded. Doors of the schools and daycares were locked and nobody was allowed inside or outside the buildings.

That measure was lifted in the hours that followed.

RCMP say the two separate carjackings and two attempted carjackings occurred around 8:45 a.m. The men allegedly used a gun or replica gun to steal the cars. No injuries have been reported.

Police say they tracked the suspects “in many areas of St. Albert,” explaining the “hold and secure” was a precautionary measure.

“When a hold and secure is called by the RCMP, details of the unfolding event are not provided to the location to expedite the process and to ensure the safety of the occupants,” read a St. Albert RCMP statement.

An RCMP investigation is ongoing.
