Surviving 9-year-old boy in London attack released from hospital

LONDON, Ont. – A friend of the Muslim family that lost four members in a vehicle attack in London last week says the boy has been released from hospital.

Saboor Khan says nine-year-old Fayez Afzaal is “managing OK” and is surrounded by the love and support of his extended family.

The extended Afzaal family released a statement on Tuesday expressing gratitude for the support they have received in the days following the attack.

“We continue to be humbled by the support our family has received during this very difficult time,” reads the statement. “The light in this very dark time has been seeing people from across our country and around the world unite to condemn racism and hate. This has been a great comfort to us all.”

The family extended thanks to the London Police Service, religious leaders and a number of politicians including, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and London Mayor Ed Holder.

The family also went on to thank workers and volunteers of the Islamic Centre of Southwest Ontario, London Islamic cemetery and workers at the funeral home.

“Today, new terror charges were laid against the man who struck down our family,” the statement continued. “We want to thank the federal and provincial prosecutors on the case, as well as the London Police Service and the RCMP Integrated National Security Enforcement Team for their tireless work. We have faith in our legal system and trust that justice will be served.”

Salman Afzaal, 46, his 44-year-old wife Madiha Salman, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna and her 74-year-old grandmother, Talat Afzaal were killed while out for an evening walk. A black pickup truck veered onto the sidewalk into the family and fled the scene, police said.
