Funnel cloud advisory in effect for central Alberta

RED DEER – A funnel cloud advisory is in effect for central Alberta, with people from Red Deer to Lloydminster told to be on the lookout.

A weather statement from Environment Canada says Monday’s conditions are “favourable for the development of funnel clouds”.

“These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground,” reads the statement.

“However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.”

The weather agency says people in central Alberta should be ready to take cover if a funnel cloud develops, adding funnel clouds can develop with little or no warning.
