BUCK LAKE – A heartbreaking confirmation from Mounties, who say two young kids died in a house fire in central Alberta on Wednesday.

Investigators say a one-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl died in the fire near Buck Lake, southwest of Edmonton.

The RCMP says they were in the area on an unrelated investigation when that investigation led them to a rural property where a house was on fire.

Officers were told there were children trapped inside and they tried to rescue them but it wasn’t possible.

Police say the kids are from Drayton Valley.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit is involved in the investigation and they are awaiting an official report on a possible cause from the Alberta fire commissioner.
