Hospitalizations drop to 379 in Alberta, 244 new cases of COVID-19 identified

CALGARY — Alberta identified 244 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday afternoon.
The newly reported infections come after the completion of 5,818 tests.

There are currently 5,415 active cases in Alberta, a dip of more than 400 cases from Thursday.
As active cases continue to drop in the province, so do hospitalization numbers.
On Friday afternoon, Alberta dropped below 400 people in hospital, now sitting at 379. There are 108 people in the ICU.
An additional seven deaths were reported.

Friday’s vaccination numbers show a light at the end of the pandemic tunnel for the province, with Stage 3 of Alberta’s re-opening plan requiring the province have 70 per cent of the eligible population vaccinated.
Vaccine numbers seem to be trending towards that threshold with more than 65 per cent of Albertans 12 and older in the province at least partially vaccinated.
Doses administered in Alberta were given a good push over the last day, with 61,874 people receiving their shot. That’s the third-highest number of vaccines administered in Alberta in one day since the vaccine rollout began.
Every eligible group in Alberta (except 12-14) has more than 50% having received at least a first dose.

And while the province hasn’t stepped into Stage 2 of the reopening plan yet, a goal that is within reach can only provide positive signs for the province moving forward.
