RCMP say two people have died after an avalanche in the Columbia Icefield Sunday morning.

JASPER, Alta. (CityNews) — Jasper RCMP say two people are dead following an avalanche that occurred around 7:45 a.m. Sunday morning on Mount Andromeda.

The two people were believed to be taking part in “recreational activities” in the area, RCMP said in a release.

The identities of the deceased are being confirmed with the Office of the Medical Examiners.

Mount Andromeda is in the Columbia Icefield between Jasper and Banff.

RCMP say they were contacted by Parks Canada, which launched rescue efforts, about the avalanche Sunday morning.

Three air ambulances from Alberta were sent to the Jasper area following the initial report of an avalanche.

Deborah Tetley, a spokeswoman for STARS Air Ambulance, says two helicopters from Grande Prairie and one from Edmonton were dispatched Sunday morning.

Tetley says the helicopters landed at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, located along Highway 93 between Jasper and Lake Louise.
