Calgarians urged to be prepared heading into severe weather season

CALGARY — Nearly one year after Calgary was hit with a severe hailstorm that left over $1B worth of damage, the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) is urging everyone to make sure they are ready for more severe weather.

Some of that preparedness means putting together a 72-hour kit, and having an emergency action plan should things go bad.

The 72-hour kit should include things like food, bottled water, medication and a first-aid kit among several other things.

The kit should hold enough to help support you and your family for three days during an emergency.

As for the emergency action plan, you should have a home escape plan that you can use if things get serious at home.

CEMA has put together a home escape plan template to help keep everyone on the same page should disaster strike.

You are also advised to practice the escape plan with everyone living in the home to make sure everyone remembers what to do if the time should come.

CEMA has also put together a Calgary Disaster Risk Explorer to show off when and where certain disasters could strike.

One of the critical events shown off in the explorer is the least, and most likely times specific events could take place.

The City also highlights the Risk Consequence Scoring for blizzards and what it is most likely to affect, as well as an Impact Assessment for infrastructure in the city.

You can view the entire guide from CEMA here.
