Students to go back to in-person learning after long weekend

WATCH: Alberta's top doctor is ready to send her kids back to the classroom next week - and it appears the ministry may be too.

EDMONTON – Students should be able to head back into schools again after the May long weekend, according to the office of Adriana LaGrange.

The Education Ministry expects a safe return to in-person learning next Tuesday.

The department says it is committed to a safe return to in-person learning at schools and it’ll keep monitoring the situation and make adjustments as needed to ensure safety.

Alberta students switched to online learning on May 7, though Calgary’s Catholic and public boards made the switch a little earlier than that.

Now, Alberta Education expects it to be safe for in-person classes again, anticipating a return to physical learning on May 25.

A statement from the department goes on to say it recognizes the importance of in-person learning and the department is confident students will return to school and finish the year off in person.

It was not clear exactly what grades this change would affect.
