Maple Leafs received first dose of vaccine, Toronto’s top doctor says team eligible

As the playoffs quickly approach, the Maple Leafs got their first doses of COVID-19 vaccines over the weekend.

That has some asking why a group of young, wealthy, professional athletes have received their doses ahead of others who may be at a higher risk?

Toronto’s top doctor says the team actually does meet the criteria to get their shots.

“Whether it’s through age, through hot spot, and in fact, through, you know, all the criteria that the province has put out thus far in respect of eligibility,” Dr. Eileen de Villa says.

“Eligible have risk-conditions in place, workplace travel that is associated with the work, and so very pleased to see that they were able to access vaccine, demonstrate that leadership, and really looking forward to make sure that all other people get vaccinated as quickly as possible,” she added.

De Villa says there have been outbreaks and challenges with outbreaks in professional hockey, so she’s pleased the team was able to get their vaccines.
