EDMONTON – Alberta’s premier says there was strong demand for the COVID-19 shot Monday morning as all Albertans over the age of 12 became eligible.

Last week the province announced that anyone in Alberta born in 2009 or earlier would soon be eligible for the vaccine and the day has finally come.

Premier Jason Kenney tweeted saying as of 10:30 a.m., over 48,000 Albertans had booked appointment to get their shots.

For those eager to get vaccinated, Alberta Health Services recommends booking through the government’s online tool or to go through your pharmacy of choice.

The health agency has reported high call volumes for anyone dialing 811, so anyone booking via the phone should expect a lengthy wait.

As of May 8, the government said nearly 1.9 million Albertans have been given at least one dose of the vaccine, with 316,357 people in the province being fully immunized.
