Thousands of Albertans book for COVID-19 vaccine as Thursday, anyone 30 and older eligible

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Albertans are wasting no time in getting their COVID-19 vaccine.

As of 8 a.m., this morning, anyone 30 and older was eligible to sign up for a shot.

As of 10:30 a.m., 62,000 people booked appointments for the shot while another 30,000 are waiting in the queue.

The AHS booking system appears to be working smoothly, with wait times ranging from 10 minutes to more than an hour.

This comes as the province announced new eligibility for the shot Wednesday. Starting on Monday, May 10, any Albertan 12 years and older will be able to get a shot.

As part of Phase 3 of the vaccine rollout, people will be split into two age groups to try and help the booking system not be overwhelmed.

Premier Jason Kenney says by making the vaccine available to everyone is the best weapon the province has to off fight COVID-19.

So far close to 1.7 million Albertans have been immunized and the change makes it so almost four million people will be able to get vaccinated.
