Return of restrictions for gyms, schools, as Alberta struggles to contain virus spread

COVID hot zones see 2 weeks of added measures as Alberta hits a record number of active cases.

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Alberta is due to receive targeted restrictions in an effort to fight the spread of COVID-19.

Premier Jason Kenney has announced restrictions that target schools, fitness and dining in the province, as well as a threat to introduce curfews for communities with a significant number of active cases.

Come Monday, all junior and senior schools in targeted locations will head online.

As of Friday, all indoor fitness and sports will be suspended as well, for at least the next two weeks.

The targeted locations for these restrictions include Fort McMurray, Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge and Strathcona County.

On top of these restrictions, Kenney says the province will be working with restaurants to be more strict when it comes to those who go dining with people outside their household.

The premier says the threshold for these restrictions is 350 active cases per 100,000 people. He adds that even if one of these areas dips below the threshold over the next two weeks, the restrictions will remain in effect.

“Where needed, we will implement a curfew where cases rates are high,” the premier said. “Specifically if cases are 1,000 or more per 100,000 population. And, in cases where the municipal government requests it.”

Kenney also announced further measures to ensure people comply with restrictions.

“To make sure Albertans take these fines seriously, we are adding additional backstops with stronger fine collection and actions with restrictions at registry services.”

If someone is given a fine and isn’t taking it seriously, they will not be allowed to renew their driver’s license and there will be “other implications in respect to registry services.”

“These fines are for the people who aren’t taking the pandemic seriously, and continue to put others at risk by not following the public health orders in place.”

In an effort to make sure the new restrictions are heard loud and clear, the province will be sending out an emergency alert regarding the new measures.

Premier Kenney urged people to make themselves aware of the restrictions so the province doesn’t have to come in with another round of increased restrictions.
