Online learning extended for CBE, CCSD students in Grades 7 to 12

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and the Calgary Catholic School District have announced that Alberta Education has approved their request to have students from grades 7 to 12 resume online learning for at least another two weeks.

“At the request of the school boards, Alberta Education has approved an extension for students in Grades 7 to 12 in Calgary Public Schools and Calgary Catholic Schools to continue with at-home learning for two additional weeks, starting May 3,” Alberta Education said in a statement to 660 NEWS.

“We know in-classroom learning has significant benefits, and that this difficult news to many students, parents and teachers. However, due to continued operational concerns this extension is necessary to ensure learning can continue.

The safety of students and staff will continue to be the Government’s top priority as we finish the school year.”

Students of both schools boards were expecting to head back to school on Monday, but CBE Superintendent Christoper Usih says Education Minister Adriana LaGrange approved their request.

“We are still seeing high numbers of daily COVID-19 cases in our community, and thousands of students and staff continue to isolate,” Usih said in a statement.

In-person classes are now scheduled to resume on May 17.

At this time, no changes will be coming to those in lower grade levels.
