Alberta reports 1,592 new cases of COVID, five new deaths

CALGARY (CityNews) — Alberta identified 1,592 new cases of COVID-19 and reported five additional deaths linked to the virus on Saturday.

Of the new cases, 1,132 were variants of concern. Variants currently make up just under 61 per cent of all cases in the province.

There were no new cases of the newly detected B.1.617 variant.

Both hospitalizations and intensive care numbers went up. There are currently 584 Albertans in hospital (increase of 35), of which 129 are in ICU (increase of four).

There are 19,702 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta.
