Calgary police officer charged with on-duty incident

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The Calgary Police Service has charged one officer following an on-duty assault in 2019.

On April 9, 2019, police pursued a car for 20 minutes. The suspect abandoned the car and fled on foot, police found the man a short time later and after a brief struggle police took him into custody.

Police say after the man was already in custody, an officer who was not part of the initial arrest arrived and applied force that was not necessary.

Constable Benjamin Zampa, who has been with the force for four years, is charged with one count of assault in connection with the incident.

Zampa has been assigned to administrative duties, his status will be reviewed as appropriate.
