‘Going to lead to a cure’: Flames 50/50 draw supporting Snowy Strong

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Snowy Strong takes centre stage at the Saddledome Monday night.

All proceeds from the Calgary Flames 50/50 draw will go toward fundraising for innovative ALS research and awareness in the pursuit to #EndALS.

Snowy Strong was spearheaded over a year ago by Flames assistant general manager Chris Snow and his wife Kelsie after Chris was diagnosed with ALS.

“This is real money,” Chris explained of the 50/50 draw. “These trials that are at some point going to lead to a cure, they are often funded in this way. We realized that as I, myself, have gone through a clinical trial, and we’ve realized the platform I have and we have in this city we absolutely have to use.”

“We are so appreciative of everything that the Flames Foundation has done for us,” Kelsie said. “They have come up with all the great ideas, the trick shot, the fan cutouts and then they approached us about whether we would like to do the 50/50 as well.

“We’ve really enjoyed all of these things. They’ve all been entertaining and fun — especially the trick shot. We’re not surprised at the amount of support that the community, that the hockey community has shown us, and the community here in Calgary and Canada has shown us. The huge network of support, we feel that every day.”

The winner will be picked after the draw closes at 11 p.m. Monday.

Snowy Strong has raised more than $265,000, with nearly $65,000 supporting the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, an international leader in research into familial ALS, Chris’ form of the disease.

Via the Calgary Flames Foundation, $200,000 is funding research at Sunnybrook’s Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program in Toronto — Canada’s largest ALS clinic.
