BROOKS (660 NEWS) – Police say at least 50 vehicles are involved in a major crash on Highway 1 near Brooks.

RCMP say anywhere from 50-70 vehicles are involved in the collision on the highway near Range Road 142.

Police say traffic is not flowing in that area and will likely stay that way for several hours.

Emergency crews are re-routing traffic to Highway 1A.

Police say travel is not recommended on several highways in Alberta due to blowing snow, icy roads and poor conditions.

Environment Canada has weather warnings in effect for much of southern and eastern Alberta.

They range from wind warnings in the Brooks area — with gusts up to 100 kilometres an hour — to a winter storm warning around Lloydminster, where high winds and heavy snowfall are expected.

The heavy winds also led to a semi rollover on the QEII highway near Airdrie.
