CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Hundreds of Calgarians gathered for an anti-racism rally on Saturday morning — one of many similar events taking place across the country over the weekend.

A coalition of the Asian, Muslim, Black and Indigenous communities gathered at the Peace Bridge, where several people made speeches and addressed how racism remains widespread in society today.

Some held signs that read “Together We Stand Against Racism” and “Stop Asian Hate.”

The rally then moved to the Black Lives Matter mural before ending at the Chinese Cultural Centre.

The demonstration was organized by the group ACT2endracism.

Sonia Aujla, co-chair of the city’s anti-racism action committee, says the reason behind the protest was to unite Calgary’s ethnic and religious minorities.

“Today we have come out because we believe that racism has no place in our city or our society,” said Aujla. “We are here to build bridges between communities, between our beliefs, between our shared experiences.”

Similar rallies took place in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Toronto.

Calgary is also hosting an anti-Asian hate rally on Sunday in response to last week’s Atlanta-area shootings.
