COVID-19 vaccines to soon be offered at local clinics

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – You can soon get a COVID-19 vaccine at your doctor’s office.

Alberta Health said community physicians will start giving shots to patients at clinics beginning next month.

About 185 clinics, with 1,100 physicians will create additional space to administer an estimated 14,000 daily doses, as supply allows.

“Physicians are eager to know that their patients are being protected from COVID-19,” said President of the Alberta Medical Association Dr. Paul Boucher. “Those family physicians who are able to participate – in their own clinics or through the new rapid flow sites – will make a substantial difference and enhance Alberta’s response to the pandemic.”

Initially, a small number of clinics will be able to offer the COVID-19 vaccines; however, as supply is expected to increase in the coming weeks, the number of clinics offering the vaccine is expected to grow.

“Albertans look to their family physicians as a trusted primary source of health care,” said Health Minister Tyler Shandro. “Community physicians who are joining the effort to administer COVID-19 vaccines to everyone who wants one will offer Albertans additional ways to receive the vaccine and protect themselves against this very real threat to their health.”

New temporary billing codes will be added to the schedule of medical benefits to allow doctors to bill for this service.

To date, 368,124 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta, with 91,593 people fully immunized with two doses.
