Edmonton police charge man after three hate-motivated attacks

Shane Edward Tremblay, of no fixed address, faces six charges of uttering threats and assault after three hate-motivated attacks in Edmonton.

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) — Police in Edmonton have charged a man in connection with three hate-motivated incidents involving women.

On Wednesday, Feb. 3 shortly after 12 p.m., a 19-year-old woman wearing a Hijab told police she was waiting at the University of Alberta transit centre when the man came up to her making racial comments.

She alleges he became more aggressive, posturing as though he was going to assault her. The man fled after an Edmonton Transit employee got involved.

Shortly after, a 27-year-old black woman wearing a Burka was walking down a sidewalk alone when a man she didn’t know ran across the road stopping in front of her and blocking her path.

He then allegedly began swearing at her and yelling insults before he was said to have pushed her from behind while making threats to kill her and tear off her Burka.

The man is also facing charges in connection to an incident on Jan. 18 at a convenience store in the city.

A black woman alleges the man uttered racial threats at a 43-year-old black woman outside the store before following her inside and assaulting her.

“The actions of this individual have traumatized these three women and created a significant level of fear in our community,” says EPS Sgt. Gary Willits, of the EPS Hate Crimes and Violent Extremism Unit. “I’m grateful to our partners, including ETS Transit officials, the University of Alberta Protective Services, businesses along Whyte Avenue and the convenience store staff, all of whom played an instrumental role in identifying our suspect, who is well known to police and ETS for multiple related incidents over the last few years.”

Shane Edward Tremblay, 44, is now facing three counts of uttering threats and assault.
