Calgary police provide more information on fatal officer-involved shooting

CALGARY (660NEWS) — Calgary police are shedding some light on an officer-involved shooting that left a 20-year-old woman dead Wednesday.

Police say officers responded to the Nuvo Hotel along 12 Avenue S.W. in the Beltine for reports of a woman in distress, threatening self-harm who was said to have a gun.

When police arrived, they approached the room the woman was in when the woman in question appeared in the doorway.

The woman is said to have gone back in the room and when she returned body-camera footage shows she was armed with what appeared to be a handgun.

A confrontation occurred between officers and the woman, that’s when the officers are said to have shot the woman.

CPS Tactical members entered the room and found the woman lying on the ground and determined she had died from her injuries.

Laying near the woman was a replica handgun pellet pistol.

Calgary Police Cheif Mark Neufeld fielded questions Thursday regarding the shooting and says he is standing by his officer’s actions.

“I support you, the senior leadership team supports you, and your community supports you as you continue to respond to and manage some very challenging situations in these extraordinary times,” said Neufeld.

Neufeld says due to officers wearing body cameras, it sped the investigation up significantly.

The Chief of police also recounting the recent loss of Sgt. Andrew Harnett as why he will continue to stand by his officer’s actions.

“Our officers have faced a number of very difficult and very dangerous situations, even if I think back just to December, and as you know well, an officer did lose his life in one of these incidents,” he said.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is continuing the investigation into the shooting.
