FORT MCMURRAY (660NEWS) — An Alberta Member of Parliament is launching a petition to ban the use of the term “assault rifle.”

David Yurdiga, the Conservative Party representative for Fort McMurray and Cold Lake, says he is calling on the House of Commons to stop using the terminology, in the wake of fresh bans from the federal government.

Yurdiga says the term was created by “anti-gun groups to scare people and demonize firearm owners,” and is not an accurate description.

While the term does not actually appear in legislation and is largely a conversational way to describe high capacity weapons, the term “assault rifle” is generally attributed to the Nazis in the Second World War, when they developed an automatic weapon which was named “assault rifle” in German.

Last month, the federal government announced a buyback program for assault-style weapons, which is a conversational term for high-capacity, rapid-fire guns.
