Alberta MLA office vandalized with graffiti overnight

EDMONTON – The constituency office of an Alberta MLA was vandalized with graffiti overnight.

In a photo posted to Twitter, NDP MLA Janis Irwin showed her office window covered in red spray paint with the words “Antifa” and “Liar” in capital letters.

The Edmonton MLA representing the Highlands-Norwood area captioned the photo, saying: “Good morning to everyone who continues to denounce racism and white supremacy, no matter how angry or uncomfortable it makes some people.”

One of Irwin’s constituents reportedly showed up later Saturday morning to clean the graffiti, Irwin said in a follow-up tweet.

“Blown away by your support,” wrote the NDP’s women’s issues critic. “Love to you all. And the biggest shoutout to Melissa, a constituent, who came over immediately with cleaner. An angel with acetone.”

Premier Jason Kenney condemned the act of vandalism.

“Shame on those responsible,” he tweeted. “If you disagree with an MLA, there are countless legitimate ways to register your views. Vandalism is not one of them.”
