City to test pilot project for private collection of black carts

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A pilot project could open the door for privatized garbage collection in Calgary.

The City has awarded a seven-year contract to GFL for black cart pickup in about 40 communities, roughly 25 per cent of the city.

The project is designed to compare privatized collection against the city’s collection service.

It’s estimated this project could save the city around $1 million per year depending on any price increases and the cost of managing the contract.

No changes will be made to pick up times and schedules as a result of the project.

The pilot program isn’t expected to start until Apr. 5, 2022.
