CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A bright streak across the sky has created quite the buzz in Calgary.

Several callers phoned in to 660 NEWS saying they saw what looked like a meteor fly across the sky around 6:30 a.m. Monday.

“All of a sudden I see this colourful stream like a bolt and it disappeared,” said one caller who was travelling north on Blackfoot Trail when he saw it.

Other callers reported similar sightings, like a green fireball that flashed and vanished in a matter of seconds.

The meteor was also reported in other communities such as Edmonton, Red Deer, Lloydminster and Prince Albert.

As for whether anyone will be able to find debris from the meteor, Dr. Patrick Hill with the University of Alberta said that will take some time.

“Usually that takes a little longer because we have model the brightness through computational models. We also have to look at the freefall of the meteorite event to see if anything does produce. We’re hopeful in a couple days we should have some information.”

Hill added that meteor sightings aren’t all that rare in the province as there have been at least two widely reported sightings in the past few years.
