Canada to receive another 1M vaccine doses by end of February: Fortin

OTTAWA – Canada will see a significant ramp up of vaccine deliveries before the end of the month, according to federal officials.

This news comes after major disruptions, which saw Canada receive zero doses a few weeks ago.

So far in this pandemic, Canada has seen 1.1 million doses administered. However, between now and the end of February, we are set to receive more than a million more, with Maj. Gen. Dany Fortin saying much of that will come from Pfizer.

“The manufacturer has indicated that we should receive approximately 403,000 doses next week and 475,000 doses the last week of February,” he said Thursday.

Fortin says the federal and provincial governments have been working on plans to make sure they are prepared to doll out the massive numbers of doses expected, saying there is more work to do but they are confident it can be done.

There are still disruptions with deliveries of the Moderna vaccine. However, Canada is expecting around 168,000 doses of that company’s drug to arrive by the end of the month.

Pfizer is expected to deliver 880,000 doses in the first two weeks of March.

Meanwhile, the CBC reports provinces are sitting on millions of rapid COVID-19 tests rather than putting them to use.

The outlet says provinces have only used a fraction of what’s been delivered, despite criticisms over many months from some premiers and Conservative health critics who describe the rapid tests as a game-changer in this pandemic.
