UCP to provide update on coal policy

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – We are expecting an update on Alberta’s coal policy from Energy Minister Sonya Savage.

Savage is expected to speak more about the policy during a news conference at 11:00 a.m. Monday.

The Alberta government has drawn sharp criticism for allowing a previous coal policy to lapse without consultations back in May, which opened up lands that were previously protected, to open-pit coal mining.

At least 11 towns, counties, and First Nations have publicly spoken out against the issue.

In light of the criticism, the government has already backpedalled once, pausing 11 coal leases and taking a pause on future approvals.

An Alberta Court of Queen’s bench judge is currently deliberating a request for a judicial review of the decision.
