Alouettes linebacker finding the light during dark times

MONTREAL (CityNews) – Montreal Alouettes middle linebacker Henoc Muamba is no stranger to adapting and overcoming. Usually his time is dominated by football, but COVID-19 changed that and it also left a mark on his family forever.

His mother-in-law Elizabeth died in June after contracting the virus.

“She was a huge help to myself and my family. Definitely feel her loss. Miss her deeply. She was extremely impactful,” Muamba explained.

Elizabeth Tweneboah was 66 when she died.

She was living with Muamba and his wife Jessica in their home in Brampton. She helped the family while Muamba was away half the year playing football. She helped care for her granddaughter Thea and her other daughter Joyce who has some disabilities.

“Right when my mother-in-law was diagnosed with COVID, she checked into the hospital. [It was around the] time we had found out my wife was pregnant with our second.”

Their baby Adah was born in January.

“We know she’s a bright light in a dark time we’ve been experiencing,” he explained. It was a time that’s kept the eight-year veteran and 2019 CFL all-star off the field.

“Not having football in my life didn’t crush me. I know who I am.

“Being able to have the right people around, specifically my wife. Being so supportive, has been able to help me,” he said.

Muamba has since directed his energy towards projects he never had time for.

“A passion project of mine — a podcast — that I feel is going to be tremendous.”

His podcast “Muamba Moments” is all about helping others grow. It has also helped him in the healing process and grieving his mother in law.

“Losing her was definitely a hug impact to us. We’re drawing strength and inspiration from her life.”
