Alberta reports 57 confirmed cases of COVID variants

EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – During Tuesday’s live COVID provincial update, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw confirmed 57 cases of new COVID variants throughout the province.
There are 50 cases of the U.K variant and seven cases of the South African variant.
There is a total of 57 variant cases in Alberta.

On top of that, Hinshaw said four of these total cases have been identified at an outbreak at a daycare in the province.
Hinshaw says parents and staff at the daycare have been notified, but health officials won’t say what health zone the cases are coming from until everyone has been notified.
It’s believed that eight of the cases are in five different households and there is no link to travel.

According to Hinshaw, none of the families broke any of the rules with their travel plans.
In two Calgary zone schools, students who contracted the variant attended class and now three classes from two different schools are isolating as well.
When it comes to COVID-19 numbers in the province, there are 268 new cases of the virus.
The provincial positivity rate currently sits at 3.5 per cent.

Thirteen more Albertans have died as a result of the virus, and now the total death rate is at 1,660.
Among the latest deaths was a man in his 20s who died on Jan. 29. The man had no known comorbidities.
A woman in her 40s is also one of the thirteen people who have passed. The woman who passed on Jan.10. did have comorbidities.
Five hundred and fifty-six people are presently in the hospital with 97 in the ICU.
On the vaccine front, 107,400 doses have been administered and more than 17,000 Albertans have been vaccinated.
