Trudeau announces COVID-19 related funding for schools

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – The prime minister has announced $1 billion in additional funding for schools in Canada.

The money is part of the Safe Return to Class Fund and can be used for things like upgrading school ventilation systems and increased support for online learning.

“The lessons you’re teaching our kids — resilience, critical thinking, compassion — will serve them and our country for the rest of their lives,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday to teachers and support workers.

The funds could also be used for buying more sanitizer for schools and to help pay for remote classes

“With this second wave, your schools need support to keep you safe, protect your teachers, and make sure you and your friends can continue learning wherever you are,” he added.

The money will be spent by the individual provinces and territories. The first instalment of funding was paid out last fall.
