Unit occupants jump from balcony to escape south-east fire

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Several Calgarians have been left homeless after a basement fire in the south-east community of Southview.

Fire crews were called to the home on 36 Street in the afternoon to find large amounts of dark smoke coming from the windows.

Investigators say the fire started in the basement but quickly spread to the main floor of the residence.

As a result, four people in the home had to jump to safety from their balcony, as their exit was blocked by smoke and fire.

A transit bus was brought to provide temporary shelter for six people and two dogs who evacuated from the four suites in the building.

Working smoke alarms are being credited with alerting the people in the building.
