EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – Alberta has confirmed 968 new cases of COVID-19 and 24 additional deaths due to the virus.

There were 14,833 tests completed, putting the province’s positivity rate at 6.4 per cent.

There are currently 13,298 active cases within the province, 871 of which are in hospital and 139 in ICU.

The new deaths were detected from the dates of Dec. 7 to Jan. 6 with 20 having confirmed additional health issues.

Of the 23 new deaths, 14 were from the Edmonton Zone, nine were from the Calgary zone, and one was from the Central Zone.

In her latest live COVID-19 update, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says the province has seen a decrease in numbers following the public health restrictions.

However, she says there is still more to be done.

“It is still too high,” said Hinshaw.

Although Alberta is seeing an improvement from the worst of the second wave, the numbers are still significantly higher than in the summer and early fall.

“We still have not seen the impact of the recent holidays and we will be closely monitoring the spread over the coming weeks to determine whether it is safe to recommend beginning to relax our current approach.”
